Highway 99 Corridor Highway 99 runs through Gridley, connecting to Sacramento in the south and Chico, Red Bluff, and Interstate 5 to the north. Opened in June 1949, Biggs-Gridley Memorial Hospital serves the communities of Richvale, Biggs, Gridley and Live Oak. Annual Gridley Invitational Basketball Tournament Local, regional and state high school basketball fans anxiously await December for the Annual Gridley Invitational Basketball Tournament to hit the hardwood. Each year the small school of Gridley invites seven of the finest powerhouse teams from northern California's boys' basketball scene to compete in this unique tournament. Started in 1953, the GIBT is one of the longest, if not THE longest, running tournament in the state. The hoop-fest is the highlight of the local and regional boys' basketball season. Gray Lodge Wildlife Area Over 50,000 visitors annually pay a visit to Gray Lodge , a major wildlife stopover on the Pacific Flyway. Located on over 9,100 acres, the refuge is the annual host to millions of geese, ducks, and many other migrating birds. The migration offers a cacophonous, magical spectacle that is not to be missed. The refuge is an intensely managed wetlands and wildlife area; many species of birds including hawks, blue heron, pheasants, and egrets, make the refuge their year-round oasis. Gray Lodge offers a handicap accesssible boardwalk, a driving loop, and photography blinds. Hunting and fishing are allowed in season and are a major part of Gridley's tourist industry. Long closed to outsiders, the Department of Parks and Recreation recently purchased 1,785 acres of the geological wonder and will open it to the public in the future. Known by many names, including Spirit Mountain, Histum Yani, Middle Mountain, Peace Valley and the Sutter Buttes, this towering gem beckons to hikers, bird watchers, archaeologists, geologists, and urban escapees from all over northen California and the western United States. *Official name not yet determined
